Earth Notes: 16WW High Resolution Temperature/RH Dataset (2025)

Updated 2026-01-20.
High-resolution dataset for heating system monitoring. #heatBattery #microgen #dataset
Data collected from a dedicated extra set of room and radiator sensors in 16WW from the end of 2024 to nearly the end of 2025. Useful in conjunction with 16WW energy and Radbot data from the same interval.

See the README.md file:

A stand-alone collection of sensor data from 16WW rooms and radiators mainly from the start of 2025, the first full year of the 16WW heat pump.

16WW is a ~1968 ~76m^2 timber-frame end-of-terrace 3-bedroom house in Kingston-upon-Thames, ie suburban London UK.

The data has temperature at ~30s intervals and ~1/8K granularity, and relative humidity at 60s intervals.

Room sensors were mounted ~1m–2m from the ground, on interior walls, away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and obvious drafts. The sensors were Purrmetrix PMTX010003 with resolution of 0.12C and 0.2%RH, and accuracy of +/-0.5C and 3%RH at 20 to 80%RH else 4.5%RH at > 80%RH.

Radiator sensors were fixed to the front of the radiator at flow/return ends, or on the pipes close to the radiator body, as noted for each sensor. 1gM was mounted on the vertical/horizontal centre of the front face of its radiator, nominally at its mean-temperature point. These were modified Purrmetrix PMTX010003 devices.

Notes

For scale: the 3l (1644725-temp.csv.xz) room sensor temperature log is ~1.5MB and contains just short of 1 million data points, and the corresponding humidity log half that many (and is ~1.1MB). The total across all sensor time series is ~21 million data points (~40MB).

It took ~250MB of a 1GB data allowance to download this data from its host.

Note that the heat-pump was newly installed in (replacing a fossil gas non-condensing combi boiler), was not fully functional until a major fault was cleared , and was tuned throughout the year. The system also contains a solar PV diverter and heat battery.

Preliminary Analysis

: winter vs summer daily temperature range

A fast sampling of daily temperature swings in the living room:

xz -d < csv/1644725-temp.csv.xz | \
    sh code/analysisDailyRange.sh > \
        misc/1644725-temp-range.csv

... and manual processing in LibreOffice to produce misc/1644725-temp-range.ods, indicates that mean daily temperature range in 3l is ~2.99°C in , and ~3.75°C in . This sample suggests lower temperature fluctuations in winter even with 16WW's use of strong Radbot-setpoint and WC-delta setbacks.

As a counter-example, looking at radiator pipe temperature in the same room (3l1, 1645003-temp-range.csv) shows the opposite pattern; ie ~12.7°C in , and ~2.81°C in .
